Everything to know about Australia Permanent Residency Pathways for Ph.D. Graduates

 

The government of Australia has always appreciated the values that Ph. D. graduates bring to the country’s economic development. Many Australian states and territories also value the high employment prospects of the Ph.D. holders, thus offering them a pathway to permanent settlement through Australia 189 visa or 491 visa.

 


The following visa streams are available for Ph.D. graduates seeking a PR visa in Australia.

 

Queensland

 

Queensland allows overseas Ph.D. graduates to apply for a permanent residency via a Graduate Stream under subclass 190 and 491. The criteria applicable to Ph.D. graduates are:

 

  •         Must have graduated from a recognized university in Queensland
  •         Obtain at least 65 points in Australia PR points calculator system.
  •        Your nominated occupation must be on the Medium to Long Term Skills Shortage List or the Regional Occupations List (if applying for subclass 491).
  •        Received a decision on a thesis or have completed graduation in the last two years.

 

Victoria

 

Victoria used to have a separate pathway for Ph.D. graduates under the skilled migration program. The path is no longer valid now, so if you want to apply, you can do the same under subclass 190 and 491.

 

Criteria for subclass 190

 

·        Must register their interest and receive an invitation for the visa

·        Be genuinely interested in living and working in Victoria

·        Must work in one of the following occupations;

  • Health
  • Medical Research
  • Life Sciences
  • Digital
  • Agri-food
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • New energy, emissions reduction and circular economy
  • Creative industries

·        Be under 45 years of age

·        Obtain at least 65 points in SkillSelect.

·        Have a valid and positive assessment of your skills

 

Criteria for subclass 491 visa

 

·        Must register their interest

·        PhD Graduate must live and work in regional Victoria

·        Work in the following targeted sectors:

o   Health

o   Medical Research

o   Life Sciences

o   Digital

o   Agri-food

o   Advanced Manufacturing

o   New energy, emissions reduction, and circular economy

o   Creative industries

·        Be under 45 years of age

·        Obtain at least 65 points in SkillSelect.

·        Have a valid and positive assessment of your skills

 

Tasmania

 

Tasmania offers a full-fledged Graduate Program for Ph.D. holders under subclass 190 and subclass 491 visas.

 

Criteria for subclass 190

 

·        Must have completed graduation from a CRICOS tertiary institution

·        Have undertaken full-time studies in Tasmania.

·        Ph.D. graduates must live in Tasmania for at least two years during their studies and before applying for the program.

·        Be committed to live and work in Tasmania.

·        Submit a career plan and prove your employability in Tasmania.

 

Criteria for subclass 491

 

·        Completed at least one year of full-time study in Tasmania

·        Must have completed full-time study on campus

·        PhD Graduate’s study load must have been at least 75% to 100% each semester

 

Northern Territory

 

Although Northern Territory does not offer a specific immigration pathway for Ph.D. holders, its 190 and 491 visa remain open for the Ph.D. holders as well.

 

Northern Territory eligibility requirements

 

·        PhD Graduates must demonstrate genuine commitment to living and working in the NT within their nominated skilled occupation for at least 3 years.

·        Must have experience in one of the occupations listed on the Skilled Occupation list.

·        Prove their employability in NT

·        Must have sufficient funds to settle in NT
