  • As a new resident of Australia, you carry your personal belongings and household goods either by air or sea freight.  Such items are known as Unaccompanied Personal Effects (UPEs). These items upon their arrival in Australia are inspected by Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. They do not allow items which have been having been prepared from an animal or plant, including timber or have been in contact with animals, plants, water, food or soil. This is simply done to prevent pests and diseases coming into the country.
  • Create a list of belongings and items that you want to take along with you. Also, add a description of what the goods are made from to make the Department’s work easier.
  • Do number the packed boxes and match them with your packing list. Use a permanent marker on the boxes while labelling. Also, ensure that you do not use sticky labels, which come off easily during movement.
  • Ensure that you safely wrap sharp or breakable objects such as knives or ceramic items, since they under the list of fragile items.
  • Do not pack flammable items like fireworks or paint thinners.
  • You can get these either cleared yourself or arrange for an agent or representative to clear it on your behalf.
  • You cannot carry fresh fruits, live animals that require permit, unprocessed goods of plant or animal origin, soiled goods containing organic residues or for that matter, items that are infested with pests or diseases.
